About A New Leash on Life

Rescuing and rehoming dogs and cats across North Alabama

A New Leash on Life is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs and cats serving communities throughout Huntsville, Madison, and the greater North Alabama region.

We work with overcrowded shelters and underserved communities to rescue animals in need, provide medical care and support, and help them find safe, permanent homes.

Our Impact

When A New Leash on Life began its work, many local shelters were operating with significantly lower live release rates. Through sustained rescue efforts, community partnerships, and increased adoption opportunities, that outcome has changed.

Today, the Huntsville area has achieved a live release rate above 90%, a meaningful shift toward becoming a no-kill community.

While this progress reflects years of effort across many organizations and supporters, it also highlights the continued need for rescue, foster care, and community involvement.

Our approach focuses on giving each animal the time and care they need before adoption.

This includes:
  • Intake from local shelters and high-risk situations
  • Veterinary care and treatment
  • Spay and neuter services
  • Temporary placement in our facilities or foster homes
  • Adoption through our locations and community events

Each step is designed to improve outcomes and create better matches between pets and adopters.


How We Do It

This work is made possible by a network of volunteers, fosters, donors, and supporters who contribute their time, resources, and care.
Whether through hands-on involvement or ongoing support, each person plays a role in helping animals move from rescue to recovery to adoption.

We operate across multiple locations in North Alabama, each serving a different role in the rescue process — from intake and recovery to adoption and community support.
Our thrift boutiques also play an important part in funding this work, turning donated goods into direct support for the animals in our care.

A Continued Effort

While progress has been made in reducing euthanasia rates locally, there is still work to be done — especially in areas where resources are limited.

A New Leash on Life continues to focus on expanding access to care, increasing adoption opportunities, and supporting the communities we serve.
