Adoption process

Are you looking to adopt a new pet?

Adopting a pet is a wonderful endeavor and a BIG responsibility!  Please adopt a pet from a reputable and trustworthy rescue where the pets are fully vetted (spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, tested, etc.) and cared for properly.  Thoroughly check out any rescue organization before adopting from them.

Consider what kind of animal is best for your family. Do you lead an active lifestyle, or a quiet one? Do you have children? Do you live in an apartment, a townhouse, or a home with a big yard? We want you and your companion animal to look forward to a long, happy lifetime together. Choosing an animal that fits your lifestyle helps make that happen.

Please read our Adoption Process, which is outlined as follows:

  1. The first step is to check out our website and see if any of our adoptable pets are what you are looking for in a companion animal.  You can also come to our adoption Saturdays at the Petsmart on Carl T. Jones Dr. Huntsville to meet the pets and foster parents and get to know them a little.
  2. Then complete the adoption-application and email it to pets@anewleash.org as an attachment.  If you come to our adoption days, you can fill out an application by hand and submit it that day.
  3. An adoption counselor will review your application with the foster parent and contact you if they have any questions.  They will determine whether the pet(s) you are applying for is suitable for your family and home, and let you know what they decide.  Other pets are sometimes suggested based on your home, lifestyle, current pets, etc.
  4. Your vet reference will then be checked to make sure all pets are spayed/neutered, taken to a licensed veterinarian regularly, current on heartworm prevention(dogs), etc .
  5. Once approved, you will sign a legal Adoption Contract and pay an adoption fee. The adoption fee is a tax-deductible donation that helps to cover part of the veterinary costs for that animal.  Typically, our adoption fees are less than the pet’s vet bills, so we raise the rest through donations from the public.  Every pet is fully-vetted BEFORE adoption.  You will get a copy of your new pet’s vet records, tags, etc. upon adoption.
  6. Lastly, the pet is brought to your home and a home visit is done.  We want to make sure that the home is suitable for the new pet and the new pet is suitable for the home.  We also check to make sure all current pets get along with your new pet.  All of this is done to try to cut down on the number of pets returned to ANLOL.  We want to be as certain as we can that your new pet will stay with you for the rest of his or her life.  They have all been through enough up to this point, and we do some up-front work to make sure the rest of their lives will be better!

Before adoption, each dog and cat will have been thoroughly vetted. For dogs, this typically includes Spay or Neuter, Microchip, Rabies and DA2PPvL vaccines, deworming, heartworm testing, and they are on heartworm prevention. For cats, this typically includes Spay or Neuter, Microchip, Rabies and FVRCPC vaccines, testing for Feline Leukemia and FIV, and deworming.

Adopting a companion animal is a family responsibility. All the members of the household should be involved in the adoption, and the application must be signed by all adult family members (21 years or older).

Three ways to meet our wonderful pets who are looking for good homes. We list all of the animals that are currently up for adoption on our website. There are three ways to meet the available animals for adoption:

  • Review them on our website. The pictures, videos, and biographies will give you a quick introduction to them.
  • Come to one of our Adoption Days to personally meet the animals. You will also have an opportunity to chat with their foster parent. Not all of the animals attend the Pet Adoption days, but if you are interested in meeting a specific pet, we will try our best to have him or her at an Adoption Day event. For specific dates and times of our Pet Adoption Days, and other events, please go to Event Calendar
  • We can make arrangements for you to meet your prospective new pet independently through the foster parent. Please contact us.

All animals are required to be spayed or neutered. We do this prior to adoption for EVERY pet in our program.  With the thousands of animals a month being destroyed at local shelters, we cannot permit our rescues to contribute to the tragedy of pet overpopulation.

Pet Adoption Days

For specific dates and times of our Pet Adoption Days, and other events,
please go to Petfinder’s Event Calendar

Please note that not all animals will be at Pet Adoptions each week. If you are interested in meeting a particular dog or cat, please let us know, and we will make every effort to bring the animal to our Pet Adoption Day!

Animal Companions at A New Leash on Life

All of our foster animals are kept in loving foster homes, where they have a home setting instead of a cage to live in.

We believe that this makes the pets more adoptable because they get one-on-one attention and some training so that they are better socialized when they find their forever homes.
